Labor Market – hot pie or a brand new world? 10 November 2017

Days might have turned colder, but we could luckily enjoy this Friday of November. The guests of the business breakfast, jointly organized by Dutcham and Hammel & Hochreiter could have their breakfast bites in the garden, freshly made on the spot. Before the reception we discussed a topic that concerned most invitees, namely the recent trends of the labor market, focusing on the labor shortage.

Frido Diepeveen, vice chairman of Dutcham and Rajmund Virágh, managing partner of Hammel & Hochreiter, welcomed the guests and emphasized the importance of the topic.

The introductory presentation by Dr Zsuzsanna Szvetelszky sociopsychologist, corporate communication expert was explaining aspects of fluctuation, employer branding, retention and recruitment. She emphasized that although the figures show strong movements, this does not necessarily mean that there is a typical answer that could suit all. All companies, based on their sector, culture and other aspects need to create and operate their own, tailor-made solution-systems. The presentation was followed by a panel discussion moderated by Györgyi Kristóf, managing director of Hammel & Hochreiter.

In turbulent times, as we live in today, there are plenty of experience ideas. Ágnes Morvay, HR Business Partner of HEINEKEN, talked about the challenge they face during the recruitment process they try to show their future employees the difference between the branded product and the employer brand. Since applicants, youngsters in the first place, create the love brand connected to the company based on the beer and festivals. Dr Ágnes Cselik, director of the Károlyi Mihály Spanish-Hungarian Bilingual Gymnasium, shared her thoughts about the changes she has experienced in the past decades in the attitude, values of the different generations.  Péter Selmeci, director of consulting services at PWC, joined the discussion with the results of a recent survey they made. He pointed at the difference among age groups regarding the preferences of opting for a workplace and highlighted the vital role of the community and personal development, ranking high on the list.

Bálint Farkas represented the „other side”, being a member of generation Y himself, and working for Microsoft as an evangelist. He talked about the dimensions that outline the thinking of the youth and how managers can enhance co-operation with the representatives of this generation at the workplace by knowing these aspects.

The generation topic also includes the silver generation. Those, part of generation X or even older who not only possess better knowledge and experience but also have greater patience and loyalty than the younger generations. Anikó Pethő, co-founder of Re-Startup supports the seasoned generation in career changes, new starts and other career steps that are also relevant for the Silvers. She also shared her experience about the difficulties these people of 45-50 years face when looking for a job. Mostly they lack self-assessment and the interview techniques.

The panellists closed the discussion with representing different professional, business and market trends from various aspects. However, they all agreed that the labor market is not black and white, based on the numerous challenges, changing trends and powerful figures. Company executives need to find the local solutions considering the company interests and the labor market situation, even if perhaps within six months new solutions will be required.

The panel ended but not the discussion since most guests find this topic the „hottest pie” nowadays.

We trust that the thoughts shared at the business breakfast will inspire more and more executives for ideas and solutions!
